Where Live Music Works Best on Your Wedding Day (And Why the Drinks Reception Is a Favourite)

When couples first start planning their wedding music, one of the most common questions I hear is:
"When should we actually have live music?"
The truth is, live music can work beautifully in several moments throughout the day, but there are a few key points where it really transforms the atmosphere.
As a wedding singer performing across Devon and the South West, I’ve seen how the right music at the right time can completely change how a moment feels.
Here are the parts of the day where live music tends to have the biggest impact.
The Ceremony
This is the most emotional part of the day, and live music adds something incredibly special to those moments.
Typically couples choose:
• Music as guests arrive
• The aisle song
• Two songs during the signing of the register
• The exit song
Live vocals bring a warmth and intimacy that recordings simply can't replicate. Walking down the aisle to a song performed live often becomes one of the most memorable moments of the entire day.
Many couples also choose songs that mean something personal to them, which I’m always happy to learn as a special request.
The Drinks Reception
This is one of my favourite parts of the day for live music.
After the ceremony, guests relax, chat, have a drink and enjoy the surroundings while the couple have photos taken. It’s a really natural moment for music.
Live acoustic music during this part of the day helps keep the atmosphere and vibes flowing without overpowering conversation. Guests can still talk easily, but the music adds warmth and energy to the space.
It also stops that slightly awkward lull that can sometimes happen between the ceremony and dinner.
Two live sets during the drinks reception is usually the perfect balance.
After Dinner
Another lovely moment for live music is just after the wedding breakfast.
Once everyone has eaten and the formalities are finished, the energy naturally starts to lift again. This is a great opportunity for slightly more upbeat songs to ease guests into the evening.
It’s a relaxed way to build the atmosphere before the dance floor opens.
Creating the Right Atmosphere
Every wedding is different, and the best music choices always reflect the couple and the kind of atmosphere they want to create.
Some couples want soft acoustic background music.Others love unexpected song choices or nostalgic favourites that guests recognise.
The goal is always the same: creating moments that feel personal and memorable.
